While they were written too late to be legitimate eyewitness accounts, they were built on the core truths of Gospels albeit altered and embellished by authors with specific motivations. There are good reasons to reject these texts , but there is much we can learn about Jesus as well. We do, however, have a few fragments and evidence from letters written by Clement of Alexandria AD and Origen AD that quote the Preaching of Peter in several places. In addition, Origen wrote early church leaders like Heracleon used the text alongside the canonical Gospels.
The text does not appear in early lists of canonical documents and may not have been considered worthy of addition based on the fact it appeared in history well after the life of Peter too late in history to have been written by him , and did not add significant, new or even contradictory material to the eyewitness account of Jesus.

While we may have more confidence in up-to-date scholarship, sometimes older analyses are later vindicated. As recounted above , Seleucus had to fend off two major efforts against him to recover Babylon for Antigonus Monophthalmos. With Babylon secure, he was able to take control of the vast Iranian hinterland, the geographical bulk of Alexander’s Empire. The capital of the kingdom, Seleucia, founded on the Tigris, began to replace Babylon as the metropolitan city of the region, but it did not achieve the historical significance and permanence of Alexandria in Egypt.
A more permanent city of historical importance and fame would be Antioch in Syria now in Turkey.

In my mind, that is an argument from silence. To me it would be like saying that because a book describing Pacific naval battles of World War II does not mention the Normandy landing, it must not have happened. The goal of Acts was not to provide a comprehensive history of the middle east of the time, but rather describe the acts of the apostles, so they were not writing about things that happened later.
Gospel originally meant the Christian message itself, but in the 2nd century it came to be used for the books in which the message was set out. The four canonical gospels — Matthew, Mark, Luke and John — were written between AD 70 and , and are the main source of information on the life of Jesus. All four are anonymous (the modern names were added in the 2nd century), and none were.
In the subject of dating the time of writing of the books of the New Testament, its primary significance is that none of the books of the New Testament give any sign that they were written after this event, and many of the books show evidence that they were written before it. Here, we will briefly review the history of this war, then follow with a survey of some New Testament readings which look to be written prior to it. The Roman legate of Syria, Cestius Gallus, marched to Jerusalem to attack it, but after initial resistance, his nerve failed him and he ordered a retreat. It’s a most basic set of questions to ask: Who wrote the Gospels? When were they written? And generally, is there any reason to suspect that they are full of fabrications? The Gospels are anonymous documents; we cannot know who wrote then. The Gospels are all late documents, written between AD, or some say even in the 2nd century AD. The Gospels are the product, in various places, of their authors’ imaginations. We shall find in our investigation to follow that these assertions are unwarranted, and are counter to the evidence available.
We assert in turn that: There are excellent reasons for maintaining the traditional ascriptions of Gospel authorship, when standard tests for such determinations are applied; There is no reason to date ANY of the Gospels later than 70 AD, although such dating may be permissible in the case of John; There is no reason to suppose that the Gospel authors took creative liberties with the events they recorded, to the point of fabrication.
